How to recreate this St. Patrick’s Day sensory bin!

Sensory Bin Supplies:

Rainbow Rice (Get the recipe for free here along with other sensory play recipes!)

Pots – Dollar Tree

Gold Coins – Dollar Tree

Yellow and Orange Pom Poms – Dollar Tree

Scoop – I used a recycled formula scoop! Measuring cups work great as well. These are my FAVORITE scoops for toddler hands!

Counting Cards – My TPT Shop

Steps to recreate:

1 Create rainbow rice (I have the recipe for rainbow rice in this free sensory play recipe book. Don’t worry, it’s easy to make!)

2 Add the rainbow rice to your bin. (We use these Ikea Trofast bins along with our Ikea Flisat Table… but truly, any bin will do! We’ve used sterlite bins, shoe boxes, and Amazon boxes in the past!)

3 Add in your pots, coins, and pom poms.

4 Introduce the bin to your toddler! I find that it’s best to let your toddler free explore the bin first before trying a more focused activity. This tends to help them focus better when it comes time for an activity!

Skills to work on with this bin:

1 Counting & Number Recognition:

Have your toddler read the number on the card then count to put the correct number of coins into the pot of gold! This will help your toddler further develop their one-to-one correspondence, and develop the idea that we stop when we get to the desired number! These St Patrick’s Day toddler activities are a great way to practice counting with your toddler while having fun playing!

2 Prepositions:

There is no need to formally teach your toddler prepositions. Introduce them thru play and watch your toddler learn! You could say things like “Do you see the coin UNDER the pot?” or “Look BESIDE the scoop to find another coin!”.

3 Fine Motor:

Let your toddler scoop the rice and pour it into the pots. This is a great time for them to explore how to accurately scoop and pour. I love watching toddlers become experts thru experimentation! You will be amazed at how quickly they learn to accurately pour!

4 Color Sorting:

Show your toddler a yellow pom pom and place it in a pot. Then show your toddler an orange pom pom and place it in a pot. Have your toddler name the colors and sort them to the correct pot! If your toddler is just not getting it, don’t worry! Another activity I like to do is have my toddler match. So I would show her a yellow pom pom and have her find another yellow pom pom to match it.
